PABLO HORACIO CRUZ

Pablo Horacio Cruz was born in San Pedro La Laguna on Lake Atitlan in 1983. He is the second of  4 children. He is most commonly called Horacio.  When he was 8 years old, his father abandoned the family. He was deeply impacted by the disintegration of his family. His mother had to work to support the family and weaving was the only option available to generate income. Horacio would have preferred to study art which always interested him, however he got a certificate in accounting as a practical solution to the family's financial needs.

Horacio was always eager to learn and began reading books on his own which were not part of the school curriculum. He only completed high school and never went to college. When he was 19, he began earnestly studying western philosophy primarily the Greeks (pre-Socrates), buying and reading used books which were for sale San Pedro, the town in which he lives. Horacio never ventured outside of San Pedro with the exception of visiting the capital and a few other towns on Lake Atilan. Horacio recently discovered Bhuddism through a used book he bought and has been  meditating on a regular basis. He also writes poetry.

Horacio began to earnestly explore his passion for art a few years ago when he began creating reliefs in wood. He decided to try cutting paper instead which was more forgiving than wood. With no previous exposure to creating paper cutouts, Horacio began experimenting, primarily reproducing iconography from ancient Mayan pottery, murals and sculptures which he found reproduced in books. Horacio was content creating the paper cutouts and was not motivated to actively share or market them. The process of creating them is of utmost importance to him and  whether or not anyone sees them is inconsequential. His sister contacted a local gallery owner last year to find out whether or not he might be interested in her brother's artwork. Much to Horacio's surprise, the gallery owner contacted him and was enthusiastic about exhibiting his work.
