Noe Yojcum was born in San Juan la Laguna in 1979 to a single mother who was unable to care for him because of economic hardship. At an early age, he was sent to live in Guatemala City in a Catholic residential program and attended a school for children from poverty stricken families.
Noe began experimenting with sculpture when he was twelve under the tutelage of an Italian priest who was also a sculptor. He also experimented with water color and tempera and gave his first painting to the Director of the school who in return told Noe that he was going to be an excellent artist and had a future as a painter. Noe believes that artistic talent is often inherited; his grandfather was a painter.
Noe did not initially intend to become an artist. He went on to study at a university in Guatemala City and majored in Philosophy, nevertheless he also studied painting simultaneously. When he graduated, he become a professor in a social work school, he felt however that he was not in the right profession. He then made the decision to dedicate himself exclusively to art. In 2002 he was invited to exhibit in a prestigious art show which gave him the encouragement he needed to continue painting. He also devoted part of his time to offering art classes to disadvantaged youth.
Noe moved back to San Juan, the town of his birth and opened an art gallery. Many painters in San Juan paint similar images, but Noe has consistently created original works of art so as not to get bored. He is supporting family members including his mother with the sales of his artwork. He was invited to go to Italy for two months with the Catholic Fathers who ran the residential program which offered him the opportunity to exhibit his artwork there and experience some of the great Italian masterpieces.
Noe's intention is to convey energy, happiness, tranquility and harmony through his artwork. He also intends to communicate the joyful and congenial nature of the Mayan people and culture.
